October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, so being mindful of those who are victims of domestic violence is important. A way to stay involved is to encourage them to create a safety plan, just in case an incident occurs. Furthermore, you can help them deal with the constant struggle of living in fear can by understanding how to communicate with someone that is a victim of domestic violence.
Filing a restraining order against the person that has committed an act of domestic violence can become necessary in some cases. Although this may not be an easy task for the victim, taking legal action and having a plan in place are both imperative when dealing with in-family violence.
Some Ways to Support a Victim
When a victim is facing violence on a regular basis, they need a great deal of support. This is true, even if they are not ready to leave their abuser yet. Ways to support a victim, both legally and emotionally, may include:
- Do not be judgmental of the situation. Have the conversation be open and honest when discussing this serious topic;
- Do not talk and force views upon the person, just listen. If a loved one is willing to speak up about their domestic violence, let them reveal all that they want to;
- Ask questions, but not too many. Knowing the severity of the situation can determine whether or not it is an absolute necessity to get legal help; and
- Let them know that there are people that care and will support their choice when they make it to seek an order of protection.
If Children Are Involved
It is already not a good place to be in if domestic violence is continuing to happen. However, if children are involved, it may cause even more legal action to occur. Legal matters involving children are emotionally charged and complex. It is dangerous for children to live in a home where domestic violence happens. They can be harmed as well, and that can be more severe than a child going through a parent’s divorce or separation. Communicate to them that abuse is wrong.
